Our health care quality assurance pledge is directed at sustaining and improving the quality of care provided in all medical settings, programs, and services. The concept embraces:
the assessment or evaluation of the quality of care,
he identification of problems or shortcomings in the delivery of care,
the development of activities to overcome these deficiencies, and
follow-up and monitoring to ensure the effectiveness of remedial steps.
Health care quality assurance (QA) generally employs tools such as (1) quality control, (2) clinical practice variation, 3) total quality management, (4) critical pathways, (5) risk and safety management, 6) error reporting and root cause analysis, (7) clinical audit and feedback, and (8) utilization review.
QA programs have been continuously implemented to improve the quality of health care, including
an improvement in the frequency of uneventful procedural cases,
a reduction in medical or surgical-counts errors,
solutions to the occurrence of cross infections, and
a decline in errors related to medication, equipment, patient IDs, etc.
The QI/QA systems permit a care team to constantly be aware of the status of each of their patients with regard to the preventive treatment, screening, and chronic disease management services required, on the basis of practice-specified care guidelines. These quality management controls function as a tool to reach patients at the point-of-care, and ensure that the entire patient population is managed effectively and efficiently.
In addition, the health care QA program addresses issues such as patient satisfaction, documentation control of medical records, and evidence-based medicine.
