Food Instruction for Patients with Hepatitis
- Balanced Nutrition
Generally the diet for persons with Hepatitis should contain high calories, high content of proteins and vitamins, and low fat.
At the early stage of onset, patients should eat most food with little oil, add proper amount but not excessive sugar; patients can increase protein food during the recovery period.
Obese patients should pay attention to the control of oil and sugar intake.
- Less consumption greasy food
Patients with hepatitis cannot eat excessively greasy food due to the difficulty with bile secretion and poor absorption in oil and (lipid soluble vitamin.
- Multiple meals in small portions
The digestion and absorption function of patients with hepatitis is relatively weak, and hence patients are advised to eat in small quantity and multiple meals to alleviate the symptoms of abdominal bloating, nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms, as well as reducing burden on the liver, which will help with the recovery of liver cells.
- Proper food
Stewed and easily-absorbed food, and fresh vegetable and fruit such as fresh fish, lean meat, clams, tomato, lotus root, carrot, green vegetable, milk, egg, papaya, and pear.
- Prohibited food
Deep-fried food prohibited, including sausage, smoked pork, Chinese fried bread, peanuts.
Perishable seafood prohibited, including shrimp and crab.
Stimulating drinks prohibited, including coffee, coke, and strong tea.
Chemical compounds prohibited, including canned food.
Greasy food prohibited, including streaky meat and animal skin.
- Food preparation
Do not prepare food with too much salt; particularly patients with cirrhosis and ascites should eat most food low in salt.
- Traditional Chinese Medicinal Care
During period of acute onset, prepare clam soup with corn silk as food supplement.
Patients should not purchase the so-called liver supplement. Medicine appealing to the immunity of human body could vary drastically in terms of quality with special conditions of indication. The improper consumption could result in various adverse effects.
When eating, patients should chew each bite multiple times (about 60~70 times). Eat rice and vegetable separately. Eat for at least 30 minutes per meal and the meals should consist of grains and vegetarian food (less grease).
