Intensive Care Units (ICUs) are among the most high-pressure hospital environments, with healthcare professionals facing burnout rates nearing 40%. To address this, CMUH developed HiThings Tele-ICU, an Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) empower system designed to enhance patient outcomes while reducing caregiver burden.
At its core, HiThings Tele-ICU processes real-time data from up to 60,000 medical devices, seamlessly integrating medical records, imaging, prescriptions, and treatment plans while securely storing data for 10 years. Its digital-twin and 3D human models provide dynamic physiological insights, supporting faster, more precise clinical decisions.
The system’s AI-driven predictive tools assist in diagnosing and managing ARDS, sepsis, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and more, enabling earlier interventions when necessary. High-definition video systems ensure remote consultations and real-time access to patient data via mobile devices, allowing continuous monitoring even when clinicians are off-site.
Deployed across five ICU units—respiratory, cardiac, surgical, pediatric, and neonatal—HiThings Tele-ICU has yielded significant improvements: 5.5% reduction in ICU mortality, 16.7% decrease in ARDS mortality, and 17.6% increase in one-year survival for MRSA sepsis patients. Operational efficiencies include a 44.1% reduction in data retrieval time, 94% less medical documentation time, and 62.7% faster shift handovers, allowing clinicians to focus more on direct patient care.
