Tummy tuck

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and adipose tissue from the middle and lower abdomen and tenses the muscles of the abdominal wall.

Surgical indications

  • Pregnancy causes abdominal fascia relaxation or visible striae gravidarum.
  • Excessive obesity can lead to fat accumulation and sagging of the belly, or excessive loose skin after weight loss.
  • Uneven abdominal appearance after receiving other surgeries.

Types of Surgery

Mini-Abdominoplasty
Full Abdominoplasty
Application
Suitable for patients with mild abdominal skin laxity
Suitable for patients with severe abdominal laxity
Incision
Located between the umbilicus (belly button) and the lower abdomen, measuring approximately 12–15 cm
Extends from the upper margin of the umbilicus to the superior border of the pubis, reaching both hips with a length of approximately 25–30 cm
Characteristics
Smaller incision; improves lower abdominal contour.
Larger incision; improves both the lower abdomen and lateral flanks

Precautions before and after surgery

  • Do not take anticoagulants (aspirin, etc.) one week before a tummy tuck; otherwise, you shall inform your doctor. Do not take nutritional supplements (e.g. Antrodia cinnamomea, Ginkgo biloba, vitamins, fish oil, etc.) either, and reduce intake of foods, such as ginseng, that promote blood flow.
  • A drainage tube is placed for 5-7 days after surgery, and drainage volumes should be recorded for 24 hours every day and avoid pulling the tube.
  • Postoperative precautions: For 3 to 5 days after surgery, the abdomen cannot be straightened. Rest in bed as much as possible, elevate the head, bend the body, and avoid abdominal exertion for two weeks. Do not exert abdominal force or lift heavy objects for one month.
  • Please wear a corset or use a girdle after surgery to promote recovery and firmness.
  • After the operation, you can take in more fruits and vegetables and water to avoid straining to have a bowel movement.
  • Stitches to the abdominal wound are removed in 10-14 days, while postoperative scar care lasts for about 3 months to 6 months.
  • After operation, the abdominal skin will feel numb or dull, which will improve in about 3 months to 6 months.
  • Abdominoplasty does not necessarily result in a symmetrical body shape. Factors affecting it include skin elasticity, fat distribution, skeleton bulging, muscle tension, which may lead to an asymmetrical appearance and may require a second local repair.
  • If you plan to conceive or lose weight, and your weight is not stable, it is recommended that abdominoplasty be considered after a delivery or weight stabilization.
