Why does oral mucositis occur?

Oral mucositis often happens during cancer treatment. Chemotherapy suppresses rapidly dividing oral mucosal cells, causing damage, redness, and ulcers. Radiation therapy harms normal oral tissues and reduces saliva, leading to dryness and decreased protection. Low white blood cell counts impair mucosal healing and increase infection risk. Poor oral hygiene, smoking, alcohol, betel nut chewing, malnutrition, or combined chemo-radiotherapy also raise the chance and severity of mucositis.

What is the role of Nystatin?

• An oral antifungal used to prevent and treat Candida infections.
• Acts locally in the mouth and intestines without systemic absorption, minimizing liver and kidney impact.

How to prepare?

• Open 10 capsules and mix the powder into 500 ml of saline or boiled, cooled water. Shake well.

How to use?

• Take 4 times daily: after each meal and before bedtime.
• Rinse steps: (Clean → Rinse → Swallow → Wait 30 minutes)
• Clean: Rinse mouth with water to remove food debris.
• Rinse: Use 40–60 ml of the prepared solution, swish for 3 minutes, then spit out.
• Swallow: Use about 10 ml, swish for 30 seconds, then swallow.
• Wait: Do not eat or drink for 30 minutes to allow the medication to act on the mucosa.
• Follow any additional doctor’s instructions.

Precautions

• If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s near the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double dose.
• Stop use and see a doctor if allergic reactions like rash occur.

Storage

• Unopened capsules: Keep in a sealed container, store in a cool, dry, dark place away from children.
• Prepared solution: Refrigerate, protect from light, and use within one week.
