Foreword
Dilatation and curettage uses a curette to remove or sample the endometrium or uterine contents.
Purpose
It is used to diagnose and treat abnormal uterine bleeding, terminate pregnancy, and check if the endometrium has malignant changes.
Preparation
- This procedure requires general anesthesia, so fasting for 8 hours is necessary.
- Please bathe and rest well before surgery; remove gel nails, do not apply nail polish, remove heavy makeup, and do not wear accessories.
- On the day of surgery, bring an adult family member. For abortion procedures, your husband should accompany you and bring his identification card.

Cautions after surgery
- Pay attention to heavy vaginal bleeding.
- Make sure you can urinate by yourself.
- Watch for severe abdominal pain or discomfort.
- If any of these occur, return to the hospital immediately.
Self-care Instructions
- During the first week after surgery, avoid heavy work and take medications as prescribed by your doctor.
- During the bleeding period or within 2 weeks after surgery, avoid sexual intercourse, vaginal douching, or using vaginal suppositories.
- Return to the hospital immediately if any of the following occur:
- Fever (temperature over 38 ℃) or chills
- Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
- Severe abdominal pain or vomiting
- Persistent heavy vaginal bleeding
- Follow your doctor’s instructions for regular follow-up visits.
