Introduction

Belkyra (commonly known as the American fat-dissolving injection) is an FDA-approved treatment for submental fat, containing deoxycholic acid, which disrupts fat cell membranes, leading to their dissolution and elimination through metabolism.

Indications

• For adults to improve moderate to severe submental fullness.

Contraindications

1. Infection at the treatment site.
2. Allergic reactions to deoxycholic acid or excipients.
3. Planned facial, neck, or chin surgery.
4. History of bleeding issues in the neck.
5. Pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
6. Breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.
7. Children and adolescents.

Side Effects

• Common: Swelling, pain, numbness, redness, and lumps at the treatment site; bruising and discomfort at injection sites.

Serious Side Effects

• Jaw nerve damage, potentially causing asymmetrical smiles or facial muscle weakness.
• Difficulty swallowing.

Treatment Process

• Before Treatment:
• Discuss with your doctor, clean the area, take photos for records, and sign a consent form.
• Apply a topical anesthetic.
• Inform your healthcare provider if you are on blood-thinning medications.
• During Treatment: Takes about 5-10 minutes depending on the area.
• After Treatment: Redness, swelling, and bruising are normal; ice packs can alleviate discomfort for about three days.

Post-Treatment Care 

• Ice the area for three days to reduce pain and swelling.
• Keep your head elevated while resting.
• Symptoms typically subside in 7-10 days.
• Expect swelling, bruising, and itching as the drug dissolves fat cells and causes inflammation.
• Results may be visible within a month.

Treatment Intervals

• For moderate to severe cases, 2-3 vials may be used per session, with at least one month between treatments.
• Most patients see improvement after 2-4 sessions. Discuss expectations with your doctor beforehand.
