Rhinoplasty

Compared with Westerners, most Asians have flat facial features and a bulbous nose, with the cartilage less supportive. As a result, rhinoplasty is one of the common operations in the Asian countries.

Surgical indications

• Congenital or acquired nasal deformity.
• Trauma, appearance or functional problems.
• Coordination measures for facial sculpting.

Materials

Artificial bone material

• Silicone: Silicone used in rhinoplasty is quite mature. It is a simple and convenient choice for one's own good nasal shape.
• Chimera nasal implant: Chimera is made of silicone coated with Gore-tex, which can make the tissue more compatible and compact.
• Gore-Tex polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE): Gore-tex has been used as the material of artificial blood vessels for many years. After implantation, the new tissue will grow into the gap of Goretex tissue, and it will closely fit into the tissue, with high compatibility with the human body and good stability.

Autologous tissue

• Autologous fascia transplantation: Autologous temporal fascia transplantation can be used alone or in combination with the artificial nasal bone.
• Septal nasal cartilage: It can lengthen the nose and make the nasal tip higher.
• Ear cartilage: The cartilage is taken behind the ear to extend the line of the nasal tip for tip refinement.
• Costal cartilage: It can lengthen the line of the nose, but there is a visible scar on the boundary between the breasts and abdomen, and is more painful after surgery.
• Autologous dermis: An appropriate dermal tissue is removed from the intergluteal cleft or the groin and implanted into the nose after a doctor has trimmed it to fit the patient's nose.

Precautions before and after surgery

• Do not take anticoagulants (aspirin, etc.) one week before rhinoplasty; otherwise, you shall inform your doctor. Do not take nutritional supplements (e.g. Antrodia cinnamomea, Ginkgo biloba, vitamins, fish oil, etc.) either, and reduce intake of foods, such as ginseng, that promote blood flow.
• The implant needs to be removed in the event of foreign body reaction, loosening, skewing, prolapse, even infection.
• An ice compress can be applied one week after operation, for 20 minutes each time and at 30-minute intervals. Do not lift heavy objects for two weeks.
• If the ear cartilage is removed, there will be a medicine cloth fixed behind the ear. Return to the clinic according to the doctor's advice and do not remove it by yourself.
• Avoid contact with water before removing the stitches after rhinoplasty to prevent infection. Antibiotic ointment will be prescribed to the wound after surgery. The wound should be cleaned with sterile cotton swabs and normal saline solution, and then applied with anti-inflammatory ointment once in the morning and once in the evening.
• After surgery, pillows should be propped up to ease swelling when sleeping, with your head above heart level.
• The medicine should be taken according to a strict schedule after operation, and stimulating foods such as tobacco, alcohol, coffee, chilies and tea should be avoided. Patients shall refrain from staying up late, while smoking and inhaling secondhand smoke should be prohibited.
• If you have difficulty breathing after taking autogenous rib grafts, please return to the hospital as soon as possible.
