With the rapid progress of modern medical technology, organ transplantation has become a vital way to extend the lives of patients with severe organ failure. However, the global shortage of organ donors continues to be a major challenge for healthcare systems.
To address this need, Organ Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) offers a new opportunity. It not only increases the sources of available organs but also improves the efficiency of medical resource use and, most importantly, helps save more lives. In December 2017, the Ministry of Health and Welfare in Taiwan officially introduced the “Guidelines for Organ Donation after Circulatory Death.” This allows patients who wish to donate organs at the end of their lives to fulfill their final wish and leave a lasting legacy of love and hope.
How the DCD Process Works
- Identify a potential donor who meets the criteria for circulatory death
- Check the donor’s medical suitability
- Sign the organ donation consent form
- Begin the donation process
- Withdraw life-sustaining treatment
- Perform the surgery to retrieve the organs
- Provide respectful post-mortem care
- Assist the family with discharge and related arrangements
